Have you heard of the book Choose Wonder Over Worry? I hadn’t until I was listening to an interview with Amber Rae. Amber is the bestselling author of Choose Wonder Over Worry: Move Beyond Fear and Doubt to Unlock Your Full Potentialand was called the Millennial Motivator by Forbes.
Her book focuses on owning your choice to face your fears and creating a life that reflects ‘who you truly are.’ Even though she’s not a psychologist or certified professional in neuroscience (or something…you get it) she has an interest in the human condition. In self-help books or ‘life coaches’ I appreciate when they incorporate some sort of facts or references.
Worry Is There To Keep You Safe
She focused on the idea that worry is there to keep you safe. Using your gut instincts and natural response to what’s happening in your life can either stress you out or encourage you to check yourself. It feels a lot better knowing you can embrace feelings, face an issue and choose to learn from it than letting it overwhelm you and control your decisions.
How often are you faced with a problem and you spend minutes, hours or even days looking for a solution?
You’re worried about time, about money, about scarcity or abundance?
You’re worried about people’s perceptions, taking time off work, responsibilities or just having the energy to do something.
And how often do you Choose Wonder Over Worry?
How often do you truly choose “I wonder what could go right?” over “I worry about what could go wrong?”
We’ve been hardwired, trained and encouraged to make the safe and sound choice.
Go to college. Get an internship. Take that job offer; they’ve got great pay and benefits.
Why would you move to New York just because you want to? Why would you leave a job that’s paying you to come in five days a week and sit at a desk, friends you’ve grown up with all your life and the safety net of your family? Why? Because you want to? No.
But you wonder about what if you did…
What if, instead, you chose to do what you feel you should. What feels right instead of what should be right?
Do you wonder what would have happened had you told that person how you truly felt?
Do you wonder if you should have taken that summer abroad instead of worrying about what you would have missed back home?
Have you ever wondered if you should have invested in freelancers to help you out or were you worried that you didn’t have ‘enough money’?
By the way, you can always make more money but you cannot get your time back.
What are you doing today? What are you doing right now?
Take an honest look at what goals you want to reach and what you’re doing to get there.
What have you done that you have messed up? Did you mess up today? Maybe not yet.
But hopefully you will soon.
What mistakes did you make? What did you learn from those mistakes?
I’ve learned to call them lessons. What did you learn from those lessons?
Because you’ve made mistakes does not mean that you are a mistake. The biggest lessons I’ve learned in my life came from the most difficult decisions, uncomfortable situations and worst experiences.
If you don’t find something positive to take away from everything you go through then life will be pretty hard, my dear. If you take advantage of everything that comes your way then you will live a life filled with more wonder.
Choose to be brave instead of afraid. Choose to be curious instead of hesitant. Choose to try something out instead of avoiding it.
I hope you try something new and put yourself out there. I hope you live a life filled with more wonder than worry.
Cheers!
Marin
